I’d say automatics based on there being more of them on the road. The only automatic I will drive is a cadillac so i have a manual & an automatic car. If you put an unexpierenced person in a stick they’re more likely to wreck it. If they’re concentrating on shifting the gears & not stalling a manual then they arent paying as much attention to the road. So i’d say a fast car like a porsche or Ferrarri, or BMW M series mostly come in stick & if you cant handle the power then the stick only adds to the chances of crashing.

I don’t know if there has been a study on this. I would believe if someone told me manuals rear-end more often because of the jolt that some inexperienced drivers may experience during take off. Otherwise I don’t think a transimission is an important factor in accidents.

I’d say Standards, because U have to pay attention to the road and also be able to use the stick at the same time.especially when U R going though an intersection with traffic lights every 500 feet within one another.

When in a car a standard trans. puts you more in tune with the auto also you can shift into natural easy-er in a standard. A insurance company rates cars by statistics. A standard will give you a cheaper rate, therefore automatics are more likely to get your fender crumpled.

nobody can honestly answer that because it all depends on the driver…but if it came down to it i would say automatics because you have to be a more skilled driver to drive manuals

I doubt there are any “reliable” statistics on this, as most police reports don’t include car specifics other than make and model. But, if you assume that more cars are sold with automatics than manuals, and all other things being equal, then automatics will be in more accidents. If you assume that because manual stick cars are high performance, and some high performance cars are involved in more accidents per model compared to others, then you might say they are more accident prone. It could be the driver causing the accident, rather than the automatic or standard, but a risk-taking driver might prefer a stick to an auto. So, really, I can’t say one way or the other reliably, but I’d guess that with plain ol’ accidents, automatics take the nod, but if you count the number of car models per accident, then sports cars with stick shift may make up a higher percentage IN THEIR OWN grouping, not overall because they are a tiny part compared to the SUV market. Good luck on your analysis.

I’m not sure of the answer to the first part of your question, but the answer to the second part ( the why) is because there are more of them on the highway. Therefore I would guess there are more automatics on the highway. And there would be more automatics involved in accidents.

There arn’t many sticks left. The high performance cars are most dangerous so you might want a percentage of each on the road when you gets the stats. The manuals will have the higher percentage.

Kinda depends on what country. Here in the Netherlands there are barely any people driving an automatic, almost everyone drives a manual, as in a lot of other countries in Europe.
It’s more to do with driving than with the technology behind the car. Most accidents are caused my speeding (at least over here they do), that has nothing to do with manual or automatic.

Definitively more accidents with automatic cars:
check this site and look at the stats.
those countries where drivers use mainly automatic vehicles have more accidents.
the reason could be that when driving a standard you actually have more control over the vehicle capabilities of acceleration and stopping, by always keeping the engine r.pm. where the reaction time to do either is shorter.
when on the road, you also can “see” and “hear” other standard cars “intentions” to do any maneuvers, also increasing your reaction time. When a standard car is slowing down using both the breaks and the engine, the way the car looks – slightly leaned forward – let you know the driver is actually decelerating, and the opposite when gaining speed.
i’ve been driving in Europe and in the USA for the last 20 years and i can tell you this as my personal experience too. I always drive standard.
