Dan K asked:

I am looking at another 06 Pontiac GTO for my girlfriend and I was wondering if I can talk this guy down anymore. The car has 7200 miles and he wants 400 above retail cause he’s “giving” us a 10-year /100,000 mile warranty on it. He’s asking $24,200 for it.

Go to this link: build the same car like you were going to trade it in so as to get some idea as to the wholesale price of that same car. You can probably assume that is what he has in the car. Start there but be reasonable, salespeople have to make a living. You need a little more detail on that warranty, what does it cover? Don’t GM products already have a 100K mile Powertrain warranty that goes with the car? Car dealers have access to the major auto auctions in the area (Mannheim Auto Auction in Texas). If you know of some one at at another Dealership, ask him to look for auction prices on similar cars so as truly see what they paid for it. Again, be fair they have to make some money to keep in operation!

I don’t think I would waste my time. He is way out of line on the price so you know he isn’t going to come down to a decent price. With as slow as car sales are right now you can get a brand new one for not much more. Even though it’s low miles it’s still 3 years old.

First of all he’s not “giving” you anything. The car was purchased with a 100K mile transferable warranty and that my friend means it is free. He can’t sell it without the warranty even if he wanted to.

Buying a car at full retail in this weak, depressed market is just the wrong thing to do.

You can go buy a brand new G8 GT in that same price range and it’s a much better car than the GTO.

    I wouldn’t pay a cent over 22k. I paid 19.5k for my 05 with 22k miles 2 months ago.

I’ve always purchased an auto warranty for every car I’ve owned in the last 7 years. In the beginning I used to get them from the dealer, but lately it’s cheaper to get them from a auto warranty company. They offer free quotes, so it’s easy to see how much one would cost for your vehicle.
