Can I disconnect jump start cable when the cars are running?

Felix_Felix asked:

Hi all!

I think my car has a bad battery. I was successful in jump starting my car with another car. I could get it started and running for a few minutes with jump start cables. I then turned both cars off, disconnected the jump start cable. My car couldn’t start then without the cable.

Can I disconnect my jump start cable when the two cars are still running? That way I can drive the car to an auto shop and have the battery replaced.

Thanks.
Felix.

When you take your car in for a repair. It is not in the best interest of the place that fixes your car that your car run the next 100,000 without needing another visit to the garage. We hear all to often of once you bring your car in for something, you keep brining it in for other things.

My car is a gross polluter. Does anyone know the possible causes and what the repairs might cost?

David S asked:

I just bought the car recently from a friend and it won’t pass the smog check. I know in CA, you can’t legally sell a car that won’t pass, but since I bought it from a friend I was planning on just getting it fixed. I just don’t know what I’m looking at costwise or what the probable causes are. Anyone?

I have to keep replacing my windshield. The Car Talk guys say it’s because they’re being made thinner

lennie1226 asked:

does anyone know if it’s possible to buy windshields like they used to make them? well, as thick as they used to make them, anyway. I’m on my 4th windshield .
it is a 2001 Suburu Outback. I’ve had chips a couple of times, and cracks that just start out at the bottom of the windshield twice. My husband has had the same problem…he drives a toyota Tacoma. We’ve never had this trouble before these 2 vehicles…he’s always driven a Toyota truck…i had a Civic before .We live in Virginia, so there’s not too much rapid temperature change going on.
And Car Talk really did say they were being made thinner…just like brakes wear out faster now, etc.

Why would a car be pulsating during acceleration?

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Art Vandelay asked:

I was riding in my friend’s car today and when he accelerated, his car seemed to kind of lose and gain power in a pulsating pattern. Instead of a smooth, uniform acceleration, he got sort of a go/stall/go stall thing every second or so. It seemed like nothing serious, because it stopped after the car had been on a while. Should I tell my friend to worry about anything?

How far does a car need to drift in one direction to warrant a tire alignment?

airforcewolf asked:

For example, my car drifts to the right slightly whenever I let go of the steering. Even if I steer to the left beforehand, it always goes to the right. But don’t all cars drift to some extent? After all, that’s why you have to keep steering the car, right?

How do I make my car smell like brand new when it was first bought?

Dad asked:

Notice that new smell of a brand new car? Nothing feels as great as having your car smell like brand new. It just gives a great feeling. Unfortunately, the smell is temporary and you might be interested in purchasing another new car in the future just for that smell. But isn’t there something I could buy for the car so it smell like brand new again?
