Car talk? What does this mean?

Lorelai Casey asked:
I’m looking to buy a used car and in the description for the convertible it says: “hydrolic for top doesnt work but it does go up and down.” I’m pretty not-smart when it comes to cars so what does this mean? If you can help, I really appreciate it!
Whoah, 29 answers already, I really do feel pretty stupid right now, thanks for the answers everyone~ You’re all smart.

This means that you will have to put the top up and down with your hands and a lot of muscle. Unless this is a car that you really want, don’t get it.

It means you have to put the top up and down by hand… not mechanicaly

Sounds like the top will release and go back up, but isn’t motorized until you fix the hydralic problem
November 25th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
It means you probably have to manually move the top up and down, as opposed to push a button.

up and down by hand

Manual works, automatic is broken.
November 28th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
It sounds as though you can only work the top manually
November 30th, 2008 at 3:09 am
I’d say it means you can manually put the top up and down, but the power system that should raise and lower it automatically doesn’t work anymore.
December 3rd, 2008 at 1:02 pm
LOL it’s you have to it manually.
December 6th, 2008 at 10:15 pm
it means the mechanics of the top does not work …meaning some machinary is broke and you have to movie it up and down manually
stay aways from it or have the owner fix it before you buy

Means the automatic convertible top is broken, but you can manually raise and lower the top.
December 8th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
you have to do it by hand. the hydraulic system is what makes it do it automatically.
December 11th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
Sounds like the convertible top can be manually used but the motor doesn’t work anymore so it’s not an automatic
December 15th, 2008 at 8:02 am
It means that your top won’t automatically lift or drop. You’ll have to do it manually.
December 18th, 2008 at 11:33 am
It probably means that you will have to manually put the top up and down!!! Which isn’t good!

It means that you have to put the top up and down manually. The motor burned out and they are expensive to repair/replace.
December 21st, 2008 at 12:34 pm
you have to put the top down by hand
December 24th, 2008 at 5:24 am
probably that the ‘button/lever’ to open/close the top doesnt work – but you can manually open/close it
December 26th, 2008 at 4:09 am
The convertible top cannot be opened and closed by pushing a button. You are going to have to manually open and close it yourself.
December 28th, 2008 at 1:24 am
I’m no car buff but i’d guess that the roof normally goes up and down through hydrolics. There just saying the automated function doesn’t work so if you want the top down or up you have to move it manually.
December 29th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
It sounds like the convertible top is supposed to go up and down at the push of a button instead of manually but that function is broken. The top can still be opened and closed but you have to use your own two hands.

power for top is broken but top goes up and down by hand. Please get a mechanic to help you buy a car.
January 4th, 2009 at 7:44 pm
Probably the hydraulic thing that opens and closes it is broken but it can still be opened manually (by hand).
January 7th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
the top ain’t pimpin no more
January 8th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
Just a stab in the dark. Some cars have an automatic sunroof, run by hydrolics. Perhaps it means that the hydrolics do not work, but the top will still go up and down manually. If i was guessing, i would say that it is similar to your car hood, some of the ones that have hydrolic hood props wear down over the rears ansd slam on your head while your changing the battery.
January 10th, 2009 at 8:12 am
It means that the hydraulics are broken that is what lifts and lowers the top but they are saying that you can manually put it up or down
January 11th, 2009 at 8:32 pm
Well I assume it means that it will not work on its own, by pussing the up or down button.
You will have to lift it up to close it by hand and lower it by hand if you want to use it.
Hope this Helps

Don’t buy this car unless you want to put a bunch of bucks into fixing the top controls.

It means that the top will go up and down (by hand) but the electric/hydraulic system doesn’t work. The top has a hydraulic pump that has an electric motor that powers it. To raise and lower it by hand is difficult because you will be working against a dead hydraulic system. My guess is that if you replace the electric motor, the system will work again.
