I’m going to buy a 2009 car for $18,000. Think I can talk it down to $15,000 if I offer to pay straight cash?

It’s from a big dealer. Maybe 300 vehicles on the lot.

When do you think truly clean automobiles will be available and prevalent?

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

bakkster_man asked:

This includes plug-in electric cars, hybrids which use a turbine to generate electricity only, ethanol cars running on fermented ethanol (current ethanol requires more energy to produce than it provides when burned), or any other vehicles with zero or near zero emissions. When do you think we will break the 100MPG barrier with a consumer vehicle under real-world conditions? What do you think the first high-efficiency technique to hit the market will be?
When I say “clean” I mean near-zero emissions. Internal combustion engines are inefficient, so even running your electric car on a fossil-fuel generated electricity is cleaner than using an IC engine.

By “truly clean” I mean in contrast to current hybrids which do not increase mileage by a significant ammount in most cases. Partly at fault is the lack of time the IC engine is shut off.

So when will our vehicles become as clean as we can realistically get them? When do we reach the point where reducing a car’s carbon footprint requires changes in America’s infrastructure, distribution methods, and power generation?

Does your car transmission need to be rebuilt if you have a chirping noise coming from the torque converter?

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

tlikar@sbcglobal.net asked:

I recently discovered that there was a chirping noise coming from my car. The gears are shifting fine with no sluggishness. I thought it was my belts but that wasn’t the case. The car was taken to a transmission shop by my local mechanic. They said it was the torque converter and it would have to be replaced and the transmission would have to be rebuilt because of metal pieces being passed on to the trans(repair cost $2,000 to 2,200). That was determined only by sitting on a rack with nothing else done. I went for a second opinion by taking it to another trans shop. He stated that the torque converter needs to be replaced but the trans does not need to be replaced(repair cost $500). He highly doubts that metal pieces were passed on because all the gears are shifting fine.

Car talk? what does this mean?

car talk
Lorelai Casey asked:

“The price for this vehicle as equipped does not include charges such as: License, Title, Registration Fees, State or Local Taxes, Finance Charges, Credit Investigation, Optional Credit Insurance, Physical Damage of Liability Insurance, or Delivery Fees.”

I’m trying to set it up to present my parents with the car I am looking at right now. The tag price is $5,995 and this is what it said at the bottom. Being not very bright on business, I assume all we would have to pay the DEALER (not insurance or outside things), will be $5995 plus tax…that’s all we owe the dealer, correct? Nothing else? Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

Does anyone have a complete list of all automobiles that get 40+ miles per gallon?

R. B. asked:

Several years ago, in the early eighties, I had a 1980 model compact car that easily got 35 mpg in the city, and 40 mpg on the highway. This was more than twenty-five years ago and this automobile was no hybrid or flex fuel car. I am looking for a comprehensive list of all vehicles that obtain at least a true 40 mpg.

Allan N asked:

I was involved i car accident with the other driver taking the blame. My car is damaged and the other drivers insurance company will be contacting me regarding my car. What should I ask them? I am planning to ask about a hire car, who will repair my car or declare it a write off, can I claim for travel expenses whilst without my car and also is it okay to continu driving my damaged car before it is assessed by them. Is there anything else I should ask?
